Scorsese Seeks Irish Actors By Sean O’Driscoll Director Martin Scorsese is seeking Irish born actors and extras for his new Irish American gangster movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and Jack Nicholson. The director’s casting agents are expected to host casting calls at New York’s Irish neighborhoods in Woodside, Queens and Woodlawn in the Bronx after seeking advice from the Irish Voice. The casting company, Grant Wilfley, is seeking actors to portray Boston Irish types for The Departed, a story that has some similarities to the life story of real life Irish American gangster James “Whitey” Bulger. “We are seeking actors to portray Irish wiseguys, state troopers, police cadets, detective, barflys, and neighborhood types,” said Sabel from the casting agency. She said that Scorsese was looking for “straight off the boat types” who look and sound Irish and don’t necessarily look like stereotypical actors. Filming begins at the end of April and will shoot for about four months, mostly in New York, with some filming in Boston. After asking the Irish Voice where to find the Irish in New York, the agency said it may hold casting calls in both Woodside and Woodlawn and is currently seeking venues to hold the crowds.
